I flew across the country to attend Melissa’s tongue and lip tie course. I had taken such classes with other ankyloglossia experts, but Melissa’s material and opportunities for hands-on assessment practice far surpassed what I’d heard and done before. I really appreciated learning new techniques for latch (i.e letting baby guide). It’s so easy to continue what we were originally taught, since breastfeeding techniques never change, right? Wrong! Melissa’s Lactation Intensive for Breastfeeding Professionals brought together a group of focused people from different backgrounds. While bringing our skill and knowledge up to date, she answered our questions with a depth of knowledge and experience that could have filled several more lactation seminars on related subjects. Diagnosis and treatment of tethered oral tissues is a glaring gap in pediatric education. Melissa’s experience, knowledge and calm demeanor have been invaluable to me as I work to fill that gap. We spent two days of intense learning on 1. Assessment 2. Functional Release 3. Aftercare 4. Oral motor Therapy. Melissa Cole IBCLC, RLC came down from Portland, OR for in-office training. She provided the breastfeeding community in Eugene/Springfield with great support and knowledge. Eight providers attended the “Lunch and Learn”. Day 1, we evaluated and treated 6 infants…Day 2, we evaluated and treated 8 infants. AMAZING RESULTS!! She is worth her weight in GOLD!! Awesome learning opportunity to keep improving what we do, which is help Infants latch, transfer milk, and no doubt improve craniomandibular development! I highly recommend her for anyone wanting to improve their skill. I hope to bring her down again in Spring of 2018….

…Melissa Cole is passionate about helping mothers and babies achieve optimum breastfeeding. Sometimes that means coaching or altering positions to help making the transfer of milk more efficient. Other times it might mean referring for a lip and/or tongue tip release with follow up myofunctional retraining. After spending two days with her in my office my confidence has grown in both the evaluation of the ties as well assessment of a proper release. I noticed and really appreciated that when discussing mental health, or other aspects of the postpartum period that can impact any/both parent(s), you referred to "them", acknowledged both parents. I recognize that some parents will be single parents, and this was also a great way to remind us that we are assessing the family unit. In a multi/two parent scenario, any partner is going to be having their own experience, worries, exhaustion, and needing support. AND, the extra fun part of referring to "them", you are also displaying use of non-binary pronouns in the event the case were to be about a single parent. Two great ways you avoided the common mistaken focus 99.9% of the time being solely on the cis-women birthing parent as the sole unit for assessment and support.

Melissa is one of my favorite speakers, I really love the format of her presentations. The case studies always help us dive in to the topic and think outside of the box.

I know a lot already but wanted to learn more about embryologic development and more in-depth individual functional assessment. This course was very clinical and practical, teaching information that can be put to use today to improve assessment skills.

[My A-HA moment was}...the varying reactions to lactation after loss. I expected a generalized care plan that I could offer but was met with the fact that I need to explore individualized care for each and every grieving family. No two families will feel the same about one course of action so creating individualized plans and being able to offer multiple options and resources will greatly impact the care I provide.

I just finished taking your Supporting Optimal Healing Outcomes course for Infant Frenotomy and wanted to just drop a line to tell you how much I appreciate your compassionate, but clinically based education and care. I’ve been taking your courses for several years and they were a very big part in how I chose to devote my career to infant feeding. I’ve also been a parent of an infant with a tongue tie and learned first hand how rough that aftercare can be when in the throws of newborn life and post partum. It means so much to know there is a clinician I respect and whose voice I trust putting education out of quality care for tongue ties that is comprehensive, effective, compassionate, and realistic. I’ve modeled much of my recommended wound care post-frenotomy after what you have recommended and have had loads of awesome feeding success for my babies. The lack of comprehensive research and high quality evidence in this particular area continues to prove a challenge for me in getting some of my providers to refer appropriately, but I’m hopeful that the stories of success and compassionate care from my families will make it back to them so that we can continue to support infant feeding as much as possible. Anyway, I just wanted to drop a line beyond the course evaluation to let you know how impactful you are.

I struggle in my communication with getting families to understand what I am seeing in my assessments, so this was fabulous as a guide in communicating with caregivers.

Your presentation reminded me of what I continue to tell myself and others: Everyone has his/her own health journey. Each family assessment, especially in follow up visits, requires a continual "check in" with everyone regarding if each person believes improvements are occurring. Positive public health, (spiritual, physical, emotional) is the overall goal. Thank you so much for all your hard work, Melissa!!

This was very helpful! I was able to determine where I was doing things correctly and where/how I could improve. I can take what I learned into my practice immediately. [My "A-HA" moment was] that orofacial development (specifically the palate) can be impacted by positioning in utero. To this point I had made the (incorrect) assumption that a high palate automatically meant tongue tie when in fact, it could be related to how much room baby had as they were growing. Assess beyond the frenulum!

I loved the before and after pics! It was really helpful to review the stages of wound healing and how the wounds can look different with laser vs scissor.

Very helpful to see how easy [the exercises] can be. This will be helpful to alleviate some of the parents' apprehension about post-op-involved care.

I VERY much liked the real time clinical video of the after care stretches and interaction… 1000% better than using a doll or describing.

I loved it! It's rare I take something and feel like it wasn't a repeat of all the info I knew.

Just excellent, all of it. It is not my scope to do these things with a baby but I can make suggestions around the edge for the small exercises that seem so very helpful, like the side-to-side tongue movement and the tug of war.

Carefully checking for adequate breast development can give mom realistic expectations if there is breast significant hypoplasia. As hard as that may be to hear it may save mom and baby from inadequate feedings and the fallout that can cause in a newborn.

The oral assessment was very helpful, I had a good assessment but was not going this deep and didn't have the proper vocabulary to chart my assessments this really helped!

I appreciated hearing about specific exercises for each oral function issue, I plan to follow that closely in my own practice.

The triangle approach really helps to simplify what may feel like a complex situation, and also knowing that herbal medicine is more of a craft/art than an exact science and that getting to know each herb like a friend with it's complexities and uniqueness, can be the most important element in providing guidance for utilizing their medicine.

This was a great critical thinking course! It built upon things I already knew related to milk supply, but made me think deeply about multiple ways to create a care plan. It also reminded me that sometimes low milk supply is related to multiple root causes not just one.

I love how she breaks down care plan for each member of the dyad separately and in simple terms so as to not overwhelm. Love Melissa's Courses. She is such a gift to the lactation community.

I loved the wheel visual you added in your slides. It really helped me have a great understanding of the factors at play in low milk supply and I could really resonate with that for one particular client who struggled with low supply despite some changes we made.

Alllll of the things in this course were my aha moment. I'm so thankful for this knowledge to support families and to understand more about oral function.

I really enjoyed the Case Study on Baby S.... just putting all of the pieces together. I feel so many of the cases we are involved in are truly multifactorial, and this case sums it up so nicely. I really appreciated/enjoyed the holistic care options!

I was not aware that there was so much data to support infant bodywork across many modalities - it was great to learn about the evidence base we can share with parents if need be.
